Questions1. Hello doctor. My baby is two years. She is suffering from diarrhoea. I gave her rice saline and medicines named Floxabid DS (Ciprofloxacin 60ml), Zis Ds (Zinc) but no effect. Would you please prescribe a medicine so that my daughter gets some relief.

You only mentioned about diarrhea but some issues are not clear. The nature of diarrhoea, frequency, color of the stool, duration, mucoid or bloody stool etc. are very much important. If she has only watery stool and the duration of diarrhoea is less than 14 days then you don’t need to be worried, be patient. Just give her saline and zinc. Continue breast feeding and other usual food more frequent. Antibiotic has no role in acute watery diarrhoea. But if there is visible blood in stool, greenish mucoid stool, abdominal cramp or fever then you should start the antibiotic. Before starting antibiotic stool RME and culture should be done to see its appropriateness. You must remember that diarrhoea may take few days to resolve completely, usually after 3/4 days. Sometime it may take 7 days or more and the improvement is gradual. You might notice that the volume or frequency is reducing, but not completely stopped. Don’t get panic. Continue the saline, zinc along with frequent diet. Saline is enough to protect your child from getting dehydrated. As you have already started Ciprofloxacin (Floxabid DS) continue it for seven days. Ciprofloxacin is still a very sensitive drug in diarrhea. If diarrhoes persists more than 14 days consult your physician.
